Scotland face major World Cup challenge

Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage after a 28-year absence brings both excitement and uncertainty, as Steve Clarke’s side have been drawn into a challenging group featuring Brazil and Morocco.

The Scots booked their place at the 2026 finals with an impressive qualifying campaign, finishing top of their European group and showing consistency against strong opposition such as Denmark and Greece. It marks their first appearance at the tournament since 1998, ending a long wait for supporters.

However, their task in the United States, Canada and Mexico is far from straightforward. Scotland have been placed alongside five-time world champions Brazil and a Morocco side that has grown into one of Africa’s most competitive teams in recent years, setting up a demanding group-stage battle.

Historically, Scotland have struggled on football’s biggest stage, having never progressed beyond the group phase in their previous World Cup appearances. That record adds further pressure on Clarke’s squad as they aim to rewrite history.

Much of Scotland’s hope rests on a strong core of players, including captain Andy Robertson, midfield influence John McGinn, and the dynamic Scott McTominay, whose performances have become central to the team’s recent success.

Clarke, who guided Scotland back to consecutive European Championship appearances, is expected to rely on organisation and discipline as his side attempt to compete against more experienced tournament teams.

Scotland begin their campaign against Haiti before facing Morocco and Brazil in what is widely seen as one of their toughest World Cup groups in decades.
