Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has disclosed that the national team has prepared contingency plans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, particularly regarding the fitness of defender Nayef Aguerd.

Speaking during a press conference to unveil Morocco’s final squad for the tournament, Ouahbi explained that the technical staff had carefully considered the possibility of Aguerd suffering another injury setback following his recent fitness struggles.

According to the Morocco coach, Marouane Saadane has been identified as the immediate replacement option should the Marseille defender become unavailable during the competition.

Ouahbi stressed that the coaching staff wanted to ensure the team remained prepared for every possible scenario before the start of the tournament.

Boufal Left Out for Tactical Reasons

The Morocco manager also addressed questions surrounding the absence of experienced winger Sofiane Boufal from the final World Cup squad.

Ouahbi clarified that the decision was not linked to Boufal’s performances or form, but rather to the tactical balance required within the squad.

“Boufal had a good training camp, but he wasn’t chosen because we need a winger profile who plays on the flanks, while Boufal is more of an attacking midfielder,” Wahbi explained.

The coach added that every selection decision was made based on the tactical characteristics needed in specific positions across the team.

Physical Demands Will Affect Every Team

Ouahbi dismissed suggestions that Morocco could face unique physical challenges during the tournament, insisting that all participating nations will deal with the same demanding schedule and intense level of competition.

“Physical problems will be with everyone, not just us. We have a specialized and important staff who have worked extensively on this aspect,” he said.

The 51-year-old coach noted that Morocco’s preparations have gone beyond fitness work alone, with the technical staff focusing on helping players manage the pressure and intensity that come with international tournaments.

Mental Strength a Key Focus

Ouahbi highlighted the psychological side of preparation as one of the most important elements of Morocco’s World Cup plans.

According to the national team coach, players with strong personalities and high concentration levels are often better equipped to overcome difficult moments during major tournaments.

He explained that Morocco’s coaching staff has implemented a complete preparation program that combines physical conditioning, technical work, and mental development ahead of the global competition.
