World Cup 2026: Bukayo Saka unlikely to start against Ghana, says England boss Thomas Tuchel
England manager Thomas Tuchel has suggested that Bukayo Saka is unlikely to be named in the starting XI for the upcoming FIFA World Cup meeting with Ghana, as the coaching staff continue to carefully manage his recovery from an Achilles problem.
Saka made an immediate impact off the bench in England’s 4–2 win over Croatia, setting up Marcus Rashford shortly after his introduction in the second half.
Despite that influence, the Arsenal forward is being eased back into full intensity following a physically demanding club campaign.
Tuchel has maintained a cautious approach to the winger’s workload, insisting the focus is on ensuring he peaks later in the tournament rather than rushing him into sustained action early on.
“Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready. I think once we go to the last game of this group he will be ready,” he said.
The approach contrasts with the more private handling of player fitness issues at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, where injury details are typically kept tightly controlled.
Medical updates suggest there has been no setback in Saka’s Achilles tendinitis since the end of the domestic season, but England are prioritising long-term availability over short-term minutes.
That depth in attacking areas means alternatives such as Noni Madueke could retain their place in the starting lineup, while Ivan Toney’s recent scoring form in warm-up matches has further strengthened selection options.
England travel to Boston for a decisive group encounter against Ghana, who opened their campaign with a narrow win over Panama.
A second victory for England would secure early progression to the knockout stage ahead of their final group fixture.
