Talents Algeriens: Imad Bouchagoura emerges as ES Setif’s fearless young attacker

Imad Bouchagoura’s quiet personality away from football contrasts sharply with the confidence he shows on the pitch, where the ES Setif forward has already demonstrated his ability to handle pressure and important occasions.

The 20-year-old is ranked 11th in our #TalentsAlgeriens series, which follows 25 young players to watch in the Algerian Ligue 1 this season. The list is necessarily subjective, taking into account not only natural ability but also potential, expected opportunities at club level and what the 2026/27 campaign could mean for each player’s development.

In everyday life, Bouchagoura is reserved and speaks little. Those around him have sometimes tried to encourage him to be more outgoing. On the pitch, however, he is a different player. He does not avoid physical battles, pressure or responsibility.

“People’s pressure feeds me,” is the approach that reflects his attitude when the ball reaches him.

Imad Bella, a former ES Setif player who is now an agent, was among the first to believe in Bouchagoura’s potential. He quickly noticed qualities that went beyond the youngster’s technical ability. For Bella, the forward’s confidence is not expressed through his voice but through his decisions during matches.

From JS Djijel to the ES Setif first team

Bouchagoura was born in Sidi Abdelaziz and comes from a modest family background. He began his development with JS Djijel before joining the ES Setif Under-20s in 2025.

He needed only one season to make a significant impression. Bouchagoura scored around 20 goals as the Setif side won the Elite Excellence championship, becoming one of the most decisive attackers in his age group.

Those performances brought him to the attention of the senior team. Sofiane Benkhelifa, a coach and youth developer who has worked with USMA and Olympique Akbou, joined Lotfi Amrouche’s ES Setif staff last season and witnessed the attacker’s immediate effect.

When Bouchagoura was finally given an opportunity with the professionals towards the end of the 2025/26 season, he did not need long to make his presence felt. Benkhelifa believes his promotion had become increasingly difficult to overlook, while Bella considers it the natural outcome of his progress.

A forward with several options

Bouchagoura is not a conventional centre-forward who simply waits for service inside the penalty area. His power and pace allow him to play through the middle, operate from a wide position or move deeper into a role resembling that of a number 10.

Benkhelifa has highlighted his intelligence and awareness. Bella, meanwhile, describes a player who does not appear to question whether he is entitled to attempt something ambitious.

During negotiations over his first professional contract, Bouchagoura did not rush into a decision. Bella sees that patience as self-belief rather than arrogance.

His progress has not been completely straightforward. He had hoped to represent Algeria Under-21 at the Mediterranean Games but was not selected, a decision which affected him. Bella tried to help him view the disappointment differently.

Bouchagoura was left out of the ES Setif squad for the opening-day match against Ben Aknoun, but returned to the group several days later for the trip to CR Belouizdad. His permanent move into senior football is therefore still taking shape.

An English agency now represents him, while Olympique Akbou and a Portuguese club showed interest during the summer. For now, his focus remains ES Setif and repeating at senior level what he achieved with the Under-20s: turning opportunities into goals.
