Vinicius among four key decisions awaiting Mourinho at Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho faces four major tactical decisions when the current international break ends, with questions remaining over the right-back position, central defence, midfield pairing and attacking line, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.

Mourinho’s preferred starting XI is beginning to take shape, but several positions remain undecided. The choices made after the international break could alter the way Real Madrid play when domestic and European competition resumes.

The first uncertainty concerns the right-back role, where Denzel Dumfries appears to hold a narrow advantage over Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Dumfries fits particularly well with Mourinho’s physically demanding approach and returns from the international break after playing an important role for the Netherlands. Alexander-Arnold offers a different profile, especially when Real Madrid need to build attacks from deep, but his recurring defensive lapses remain a concern.

That weakness is likely to count against him more heavily under Mourinho, leaving Dumfries in the stronger position for now.

Militao return could reshape defence

In central defence, circumstances could prove just as influential as the manager’s tactical preferences. Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen are expected to form the first-choice partnership, although injuries and suspensions continue to restrict Mourinho’s options.

The condition in which Eder Militao returns will be crucial. The Brazil defender has started training with the squad and is nearing a return to action, potentially changing the order of preference in the position.

If Militao recaptures his previous level, Sport believes there is little doubt he would be Real Madrid’s best central defender.

The midfield also presents Mourinho with a difficult balance. A pairing of Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni provides good coverage across the pitch and greater defensive security, but it may limit Real Madrid’s creativity in possession.

That lack of invention has affected the club for several seasons and is closely linked to the roles of the French and Uruguayan midfielders.

Bernardo Silva would offer a different type of quality in the centre of the pitch, but his influence has so far fallen well short of expectations. His limited involvement with Portugal also suggests he is not currently at his best physically.

Guler and Diomande push for opportunities

The most pressing question concerns the attack, where Arda Guler and Diomande are both demanding more playing time.

Guler has become an increasingly important source of creativity, while Diomande is showing he can provide qualities the team need. His minutes in the Madrid derby, at least, have given Real Madrid supporters reason for optimism.

Using both players, however, would require another member of the attack to make way. That brings the spotlight on players who are difficult to leave out, particularly Vinicius.

From a purely footballing perspective, Vinicius is under scrutiny after making a start to the season well below his usual standard. Mourinho has publicly defended the Brazil forward, insisting that it is only a matter of time before his goalscoring touch returns.

Even so, attention remains firmly fixed on him.

A demanding October schedule, featuring a series of difficult matches, should provide a clearer indication of the direction Real Madrid are taking under Mourinho.
