UFH Baby Wolves target top-two finish as winning run continues

University of Fort Hare coach Simphiwe Mafene says the UFH Baby Wolves are determined to build on their recent victories and secure a top-two finish in the 2026 Hollywoodbets Super League Amplified.

The Eastern Cape side will seek a third successive win when they meet the University of Johannesburg in Polokwane on Saturday.

UFH are third in the league standings, having collected 13 points from eight matches. They have followed a 3-2 victory over City Lads with a 1-0 win against First Touch Ladies, results which have strengthened their challenge for a place in the top two.

Mafene believes the team’s progress during the opening half of the campaign has been the result of a collective effort involving the players, technical staff and management.

“I believe favour and luck has finally located the home of the UFH Baby Wolves once again. Credit should be given to the management, the players and the entire technical team for the efforts put forth to ensure we keep up with the competition,” Mafene told SABC Sport.

He said the club’s ambition had not changed, although the squad was concentrating on improving from one match to the next.

“Well, part of the mandate is still the same. The aim is to finish in position two. For now, we keep focused on each game to become better for the next game,” he added.

The victory over First Touch Ladies has provided further encouragement, according to Mafene, who feels the result could prove important in the race for a higher position by the end of the season.

“Well, our win against First Touch has really given us leverage and hope of securing a better position towards the end of the season. So, yes, it really helped us a lot,” he said.

UFH now face a University of Johannesburg team Mafene expects to provide a demanding test. The Gauteng side are competing for top spot, while the Baby Wolves are aiming to move into second place.

The teams have already met in the first leg, when UFH claimed three points after scoring two goals. Mafene, however, expects Saturday’s fixture to be closely contested.

“Coming to the game against UJ in Polokwane on Saturday, look, I believe the plan is still the same. We focus on each game at a time. I mean, we played against them in the first leg and managed to secure three points and score two goals,” he said.

“So, coming to this encounter, I believe it will be a game of two halves. We have a plan and they have a plan. We need position two, they need position one. Well, may the best team win,” Mafene added.
