Itumeleng Khune backs Elias Mokwana as ideal Kaizer Chiefs signing

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune believes Elias Mokwana would be the right addition for the Soweto club as they look to improve their attacking options.

Mokwana has been without a club since September, when he left Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis. His time there included a loan spell with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem.

A move to Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Athletic Club was also reportedly called off at the last minute because of registration complications. The 27-year-old winger is therefore available to join a club of his choice.

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly been offered Mokwana by his representatives, with the player understood to be strongly interested in moving to Naturena.

Speaking on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone, Khune supported the proposed transfer and compared Mokwana’s style to that of a former favourite at Chiefs.

“Definitely,” Khune said when asked whether the former Sekhukhune United player would be the right signing for the club.

“Mokwane reminds me of ‘Shuffle’ Pule back then, formerly known, but now Mahlangu. Very skilful, not shy to take on players. He can create goals, he can score goals, so he can be a great addition to the team.

“These young boys can look up to him, and he will be holding their hands,” he added.

Mokwana established a strong reputation in the domestic top flight during his time with Babina Noko. He made 51 appearances and scored five goals for Sekhukhune United.

Those performances helped him earn an important place in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad. Mokwana has since won 12 international caps and scored two goals.

His availability comes as Chiefs seek greater quality in the final third. The Glamour Boys have struggled to produce goals consistently under Fernando da Cruz and have scored only 13 times in all senior competitions this season.

That return is reflected in their league position, with Chiefs currently fifth in the standings. A player capable of creating chances and contributing goals could therefore address one of the team’s most pressing problems.

Khune’s endorsement adds to the growing focus on whether Chiefs will pursue a deal for Mokwana, who remains available after his proposed move to Wydad Athletic Club failed to materialise.
