Chippa United have relieved Dan Malesela of his duties as coach of their DStv Diski Challenge team, according to a source close to the club.
The decision adds a new twist to the on-and-off relationship between Malesela and Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi, with the experienced coach now facing uncertainty over his next move.
Malesela was also released from his role at the Africa School of Excellence, where Chippa United’s Diski team is based.
“Coach Dan has just been released from both the School of Excellence and the DDC projects since the Chippa United Diski team is based at the school, the same team that was assembled by coach Dan,” a source said.
The source added that the reason for the decision was not clear, although results in the DStv Diski Challenge may have played a part.
“It’s not clear why the coach is being let go, but it’s probably about the DDC team results,” the source said.
Malesela could not be reached for comment.
He joined the Africa School of Excellence and Chippa United’s DDC team before the start of the season. His appointment followed the decision by Mpengesi’s Chippa Group to take ownership of the historic academy.
That move was intended to connect grassroots player development with professional football and marked Malesela’s return to youth football development.
The former defender had been responsible for assembling the Chippa United Diski team, which is based at the school.
