Mamelodi Sundowns responded to their disappointing CAF Champions League exit by securing a place in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over last season’s runners-up, Marumo Gallants.
The Tshwane club went into the match under pressure after their unexpected departure from Africa’s premier club competition. Head coach Miguel Cardoso made several changes to his starting XI as Sundowns sought a positive result on home soil.
Sundowns controlled most of the early possession, but Marumo Gallants defended with discipline and limited the space available to their opponents.
The hosts almost took the lead in the 10th minute when Iqraam Rayners sent a cross across the penalty area, only for it to evade every Sundowns player.
They did not have to wait long for the breakthrough, however. After 20 minutes, Thapelo Morena initiated the move by finding Rayners, who then supplied Siyanda Ndlovu.
Ndlovu, known as Skhwishi, finished clinically from a narrow angle to give Sundowns the advantage.
Marumo Gallants struggled to produce a sustained response before half-time. Their best opportunity came when Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo tested goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, who dealt with the attempt comfortably.
Cardoso made two changes at the interval, bringing on Aubrey Modiba and Marcelo Allende for Fawaz Basadien and Thabo Cele.
The substitutions did not alter Sundowns’ control of the match. The home side continued to dictate the tempo and forced Gallants to spend long periods without possession.
Despite their limited opportunities, the visitors came close to equalising shortly before the hour mark. Samkele Sihlali took advantage of a momentary defensive lapse, but Goss made an outstanding save to protect Sundowns’ lead.
Gallants were unable to find a way through in the closing stages as Sundowns held on to complete a narrow victory.
The result ends Marumo Gallants’ Carling Knockout Cup campaign and sends Mamelodi Sundowns into the last eight. The quarter-final draw will take place on Wednesday, when Sundowns will discover their next opponents.
