Tottenham explore move for Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush as De Zerbi plans attacking rebuild
Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Egypt international Omar Marmoush from Manchester City during the summer transfer window, with manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly keen to reshape his attack.
The club’s interest could lead to a significant change in the make-up of Tottenham’s frontline as De Zerbi attempts to rebuild the London side and return them to serious contention for the Premier League title.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, De Zerbi wants Tottenham to make a double signing from Manchester City, with Brazil forward Savinho also on the club’s list.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are planning to overhaul all three positions in their attack ahead of the new season. The proposed forward line would include Marmoush, Savinho and Liverpool’s Netherlands international Cody Gakpo.
Tottenham’s interest in Marmoush comes after the 27-year-old found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola last season.
The Egyptian forward’s prospects of securing a consistent place in the starting XI appear unlikely to improve while Erling Haaland remains Guardiola’s preferred option through the centre of the attack. That was illustrated again in Manchester City’s Community Shield match against Arsenal.
English journalist Gary Ward has reported that Manchester City will not sanction the departures of Marmoush or Savinho until the club has secured strong replacements.
The Premier League side are understood to be waiting for the completion of deals for Enzo Fernandez and Lille’s young Morocco international Ayoub Bouaddi before deciding whether either forward can leave.
The situation leaves Tottenham’s plans dependent not only on their own negotiations but also on Manchester City’s ability to strengthen elsewhere. Should City complete their proposed incoming transfers, Marmoush and Savinho could become available for a move.
Marmoush joined Manchester City after building his reputation in the Bundesliga and has been viewed as a forward capable of operating centrally or from a wide position. His versatility is understood to be part of the appeal for Tottenham as De Zerbi considers a broader reconstruction of the team.
Gakpo, meanwhile, would provide another option across the front three as Tottenham consider replacing their current attacking combination with a more mobile and flexible unit.
The reports indicate that Tottenham’s preference is to add two wingers, with Savinho or Pedro Neto among the options, alongside Gakpo. They are also considering a central striker, with Marmoush and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson listed as the main possibilities at this stage.
“Always said since end of June. Two wingers (Savinho or Neto, + Gakpo), one centre striker (Marmoush or Jackson the main options as of now).”
No agreement has been confirmed for any of the players mentioned, but Tottenham’s reported interest in Marmoush and Savinho represents an early indication of the scale of change De Zerbi wants to bring to the club.
