Manchester United’s Old Trafford collapse leaves them with worst league start in 39 years

Manchester United’s difficult start to the season deepened as Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving the home side with their lowest points total after eight Premier League matches since 1986-87.

The defeat, in the eighth round of Premier League fixtures, added further pressure on Manchester United after a troubled opening to the campaign. Bournemouth secured a convincing victory on their own ground, while the result exposed the extent of the problems facing the hosts.

Manchester United have collected only seven points from their first eight league games. Their record stands at one win, four draws and three defeats.

Statistics provider Opta said that was the club’s worst return at this stage of a league season since 1986-87, when Manchester United had taken only four points from their opening eight matches.

Opta’s figures underline the scale of the team’s decline compared with its performances over the past four decades. The seven-point total leaves Manchester United needing a significant improvement in results if they are to recover their position during the remainder of the season.

The loss to Bournemouth also continued a damaging home trend. Since the 2023-24 season, Manchester United have suffered more defeats by three or more goals at home, across all competitions, than any other Premier League side.

They have now recorded seven such losses during that period.

Opta summarised the latest figures in a post published on 25 October 2026: “Manchester United have won just seven points from eight Premier League games this season (W1 D4 L3), their lowest at this stage of a league season since 1986-87 (4). Nightmare.”

Bournemouth’s three-goal victory therefore carried significance beyond one difficult afternoon for Manchester United. It extended the club’s poor home record in heavy defeats and left them with a points tally not seen at this stage of a league campaign since the 1980s.
