Mbappe to attend Ballon d'Or awards in London

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe will reportedly attend Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London as he hopes to win football’s most prestigious individual award after an impressive campaign in front of goal.

The France international, who has Cameroonian descent is among the contenders for the 2026 prize following a prolific season in which he scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid. His remarkable numbers included 25 goals in La Liga, making him the competition’s leading scorer, while he also finished as the top scorer at the 2026 World Cup with 10 goals.

According to reports, Mbappe is expected to be present at the ceremony as he awaits the announcement of the winner, with England captain Harry Kane and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal also in contention.

Kane is reportedly the leading favourite after enjoying an outstanding season, registering 61 goals and seven assists across all competitions. The Bayern Munich striker also collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga title, strengthening his credentials in the race for the individual honour.

Yamal, meanwhile, has also emerged as a serious challenger after another impressive campaign with Barcelona. The teenage forward played a key role in the club’s success, helping them secure two trophies, including the La Liga title, while also contributing to Spain’s triumph at the 2026 World Cup.

Mbappe’s goal-scoring exploits put him firmly in the conversation, but his chances of winning could be complicated by Real Madrid and France ending the campaign without major trophies. In an award often influenced by individual brilliance, team achievements and performances on the biggest stages, the Frenchman faces a difficult challenge against Kane and Yamal.

Despite the competition, Mbappe has expressed strong confidence in his own performances, insisting: “There wasn’t anyone better than me last season.”

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward believes his individual numbers make a compelling case for the award, having consistently delivered goals for club and country.

Mbappe has also reportedly expressed his desire to dedicate the 2026 Ballon d’Or to Africa should he emerge victorious. The statement has generated discussion ahead of the ceremony, although the outcome will ultimately depend on the voting process and the assessment of the candidates’ performances over the relevant period.

With Kane’s trophy-laden campaign, Yamal’s success with Barcelona and Spain, and Mbappe’s exceptional scoring record, the ceremony is expected to draw significant attention as football awaits the announcement of its next Ballon d’Or winner.
