Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi angry after VAR clears Jayden Bogle tackle on Mathys Tel
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was left furious after Leeds United defender Jayden Bogle avoided a red card for a challenge that injured Mathys Tel during their goalless Premier League meeting.
The incident took place at Elland Road in the 10th round of the Premier League, where neither side managed to score. It followed a lengthy VAR review but prompted strong protests from the Tottenham camp.
Tel, 21, suffered significant pain after Bogle’s boot came down on his Achilles in a forceful challenge near the halfway line. Despite the nature of the tackle, Leeds’ right-back was not shown a yellow card.
Referee John Brooks also did not go to the pitchside monitor after VAR Tony Harrington had reviewed the footage.
The Premier League match centre later confirmed that the decision not to dismiss Bogle had been checked and upheld.
“ The referee’s decision not to send off Bogle for his challenge on Mathys Tel was reviewed, and the VAR confirmed the on-field decision,” the statement said.
The VAR official added: “I confirm the on-field decision not to issue a red card. There was not a high speed in the challenge, and he took steps towards the ball. I confirm that the challenge was reckless.”
Tottenham’s frustration increased when Tel was forced to leave the pitch despite initially attempting to continue. The forward had been close to earning a place in the France squad before the international break, although he was ultimately not selected.
De Zerbi’s anger was clear as the former Bayern Munich player made his way off the field. The Tottenham manager replaced him with Dominic Solanke two minutes before half-time.
The match at Elland Road ended without a goal after the controversial decision involving Bogle and Tel became the central talking point.
