Spain v Argentina: FA chief Claudio Tapia urges fans to reject ‘lies’ after World Cup final defeat

Argentina’s football federation president Claudio Tapia has urged supporters to “not be fooled by lies” after wild conspiracy theories erupted in the country following defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Spain claimed the title thanks to a decisive goal from Ferran Torres, a strike that not only sealed La Roja’s triumph but also unleashed a storm of accusations and claims in Argentina – including alleged FBI interference, political pressure and even threats against players’ families.

In response, senior figures in Argentine football have moved to shut down the speculation and call for calm, insisting Spain were worthy champions and that the result must be accepted.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni and his assistant Roberto Ayala were the first to publicly push back against the wave of rumours, choosing instead to acknowledge Spain’s superiority on the pitch.

Both men, widely praised at home for leading Argentina to previous triumphs, delivered what local media described as a “knockout blow” to the conspiracy narratives by openly conceding that Spain had been the better side in the final.

Their stance paved the way for a more forceful intervention from Tapia, who had himself become a central figure in the swirl of rumours.

Tapia breaks silence after FBI detention claims

Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), had remained largely silent in the immediate aftermath of the final – a silence that fuelled ever more dramatic claims, including false suggestions that he had been detained by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Seeking to draw a line under the speculation, Tapia published a lengthy and forthright statement on his official social media accounts, directly addressing the Argentine public.

“لم نتمكن من تجاوز اسبانيا. لقد كانوا الطرف الافضل، وحققوا فوزا مستحقا وعلينا ان نتحلى بالشجاعة للاعتراف بذلك. في عالم الرياضة، نتعلم من تقبل الهزايم بنفس الكبرياء الذي نحتفل به في الانتصارات,” he said at the start of his message.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Tapia added: “نعم، لقد خسرنا النهايي، لكن الحقيقة الثابتة ان هذا الجيل منح بلادنا فرحة هايلة من قبل. لقد احتفلت الارجنتين بالفعل لان هذا الفريق اثبت مجددا قيمته الكبيرة لدى شعبنا. الهزيمة تولمنا لاننا نمتلك عقلية تنافسية، ولاننا الفريق الاكثر تتويجا في التاريخ، ولان المركز الثاني لا يرضي طموحنا ابدا. نحن نتالم لاننا اعتدنا القتال حتى الرمق الاخير، ولاننا ما زلنا ضمن افضل فريقين في العالم.”

Call for perspective after petition backlash

The anger over the defeat has also been reflected online, with one viral petition – mentioned widely in Argentine media – reportedly gathering more than 23 million signatures demanding Argentina be banned from the World Cup for life, in a bizarre backlash against perceived injustices and alleged manipulation.

Tapia, however, urged supporters to step back and look at the broader picture of what the team had achieved.

He said: “دعونا نوقف الكرة للحظة ونتامل. تذكروا تضحيات هولاء اللاعبين والجهاز الفني وكل شخص عمل لاكثر من 50 يوما بعيدا عن عايلته، بهدف واحد فقط: تمثيل الارجنتين بافضل صورة ممكنة.”

‘We leave our souls in every training session’

In a message laced with national pride, Tapia reminded fans of the commitment shown by the squad and staff throughout the tournament.

“نحن ارجنتينيون، ننافس بشراسة وشغف ومن كل قلوبنا. نترك ارواحنا في كل حصة تدريبية وكل مباراة، ولقد مثلنا القارة الامريكية باكملها بكل فخر. نحن ندافع عن الواننا وعلمنا وبلدنا في كل ملعب حول العالم,” he continued.

Tapia’s intervention is being seen as an attempt to stabilise the footballing landscape in Argentina, which has swung rapidly between euphoria and outrage in recent years as the national team has contested major finals.

‘No excuses here – we play football only’

The AFA chief concluded his statement with a stark warning to those spreading or amplifying baseless allegations, insisting that such campaigns threatened to undermine a generation of players who had delivered unprecedented joy to the country.

“لا تنخدعوا بالاكاذيب والحملات الممنهجة التي تهدف فقط الى زعزعة استقرارنا. توقفوا عن محاولة تاليب الجماهير ضد من قدموا الكثير لكرة القدم الارجنتينية. اليوم هو وقت الشكر والدعم والاعتراف بفضل هولاء اللاعبين الذين بذلوا ارواحهم من اجل القميص. الحملات المغرضة ستزول، لكن التزام وعمل وقلب منتخبنا الوطني سيبقى الى الابد. لا توجد اعذار هنا، هنا نلعب كرة القدم فقط، وهذا المنتخب سيواصل تمثيل الارجنتين بنفس الفخر المعتاد.. تحيا الارجنتين,” he wrote.

With Ferran Torres’ decisive goal still replayed around the world and Spain celebrating a historic triumph, Argentina’s football leadership is now focused on healing divisions at home – and on convincing a passionate, wounded fan base that defeat, however painful, does not require a conspiracy to explain it.
