CAF Referee of the Year Omar Artan has been invited by UEFA to attend the governing body’s Men’s Summer Course in Geneva, Switzerland, in a move that underlines his growing reputation on the international stage.

The Somali referee is expected to take part in the prestigious course from 31 August to 2 September 2026, alongside officials from across Europe.

UEFA has formally communicated the invitation to both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Somali Football Association, informing the two bodies of its plans for Artan to participate in the programme.

The invitation represents a significant recognition of Artan’s development and performances as a referee, particularly after he was named CAF Referee of the Year.

The three-day UEFA course will provide an opportunity for referees to undergo technical assessments, receive updates on the latest laws and interpretations of the game, and prepare for the demands of officiating at the highest level.

Artan’s involvement is also notable because UEFA has expressed an interest in having him officiate football matches in Europe.

Although the details of any future appointments have not been announced, UEFA’s interest could potentially open the door for the Somali official to gain further experience in European competitions and strengthen his profile beyond African football.

Artan has established himself as one of Africa’s leading referees in recent years, earning appointments to major international matches and competitions.

His recognition as CAF Referee of the Year has further enhanced his standing within African football, while the UEFA invitation provides another indication of the esteem in which he is held internationally.

The invitation is also a boost for Somali football, with Artan becoming an increasingly prominent representative of the country on the global refereeing stage.

His participation in the Geneva course is expected to strengthen his technical knowledge and experience, while any future opportunity to officiate matches in Europe could provide an important platform for further development.

For CAF and the Somali Football Association, UEFA’s decision to invite Artan is a significant endorsement of the progress he has made and the quality of African refereeing on the international stage.
