Serhou Guirassy reaches 23 Champions League goals as Dortmund striker closes in on Europe’s elite

Serhou Guirassy continued his outstanding European scoring run with two goals for Borussia Dortmund against Sabah on Tuesday, taking his total to 23 goals in 31 Champions League appearances.

Known as “Mengue” in Guinea, the 30-year-old scored after only 10 minutes in Azerbaijan before adding a second goal in the second half. The performance further underlined his remarkable efficiency in Europe’s leading club competition.

Guirassy had gone into the match with 21 goals in 30 Champions League games, an average of 0.70 goals per appearance. His latest double has lifted that figure to approximately 0.74 goals per game.

Only a small number of active forwards in Europe have produced better career scoring rates in the competition. Erling Haaland remains in a different category, with more than one goal per match, while Harry Kane’s average is around 0.79.

Guirassy now sits close to those figures and, on current ratios, is ahead of Kylian Mbappe. His 23 goals also strengthen his position among the top five African scorers in UEFA Champions League history.

His rise has been particularly striking given that he played only four Champions League matches for Rennes in 2020-2021, scoring twice. It was after joining Borussia Dortmund that his European career reached another level.

During the 2024-2025 season, Guirassy scored 13 goals in 14 Champions League appearances and finished as joint top scorer of the competition alongside Raphinha. His average at the time was an impressive 0.93 goals per appearance.

He had a quieter campaign in Europe in 2025-2026, scoring four times, but has made an exceptional start this season. He has already scored four goals in three matchdays, with both of his doubles coming against Villarreal and Sabah.

His domestic form has also been solid. In the Bundesliga, he has scored two goals and provided two assists in six appearances, while his effectiveness in European competition remains undiminished.

Dortmund’s upcoming fixtures will give Guirassy the opportunity to add to his record against some of the continent’s most prominent clubs.

The German side will host Betis Seville on 4 November before travelling to Arsenal on 24 November. Inter Milan will then visit Dortmund on 9 December, followed by matches against Aston Villa and AEK Athens in January.

Those fixtures could provide further opportunities for Guirassy to expand a Champions League record that is already becoming historically significant for an African striker.
