Ghana’s Black Starlets crash out of WAFU U17 Championship, miss 2027 AFCON after Ivory Coast defeat

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations have been shattered after the Black Starlets suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship in Burkina Faso.

The defeat at the 4th August Stadium in Ouagadougou ends Ghana’s campaign and leaves them without a place at next year’s continental tournament in Morocco, dealing another setback to the country’s ambitions of returning to the global stage at youth level.

Kassim Ocansey’s side were left with an uphill task early in the contest after Daniel Owusu received a red card in the 18th minute, forcing Ghana to play most of the match with 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Black Starlets defended resolutely and frustrated their West African rivals for much of the encounter. However, their resistance was finally broken in the 77th minute when Ivory Coast scored the decisive goal to secure victory, a place in the final and qualification for the 2027 U17 AFCON.

Red card proves costly for Ghana

Ghana’s dismissal proved a defining moment in a match that offered little room for error, with a place in the final and qualification for the continental tournament at stake.

Having lost a player inside the opening 20 minutes, the Black Starlets were forced to adjust their approach and devote much of their attention to containing the Ivorians.

Ocansey’s team showed determination to remain in contention, limiting their opponents for long periods despite the challenge of playing with 10 men.

However, their defensive effort ultimately proved insufficient as Ivory Coast found the breakthrough 13 minutes from the end.

The goal ended Ghana’s hopes of progressing to the final and securing one of the qualification places available through the WAFU Zone B competition.

Promising group stage ends in disappointment

The semi-final loss represents a disappointing conclusion to a campaign that had begun positively for the Black Starlets.

Ghana topped Group A with seven points from three matches, finishing the opening stage unbeaten and demonstrating their potential to compete for a place at the continental tournament.

They opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Togo before recording an impressive 3-1 win against Benin, with Alidu Issah scoring twice.

The Black Starlets then played out a goalless draw against hosts Burkina Faso to complete the group stage without defeat.

That run placed Ghana in a strong position heading into the semi-finals, where victory would have guaranteed their qualification for the 2027 U17 AFCON.

Instead, the defeat to Ivory Coast brought their hopes to an abrupt end and denied them the opportunity to build on their encouraging performances in the group stage.

World Cup wait continues

Ghana’s failure to qualify for the continental tournament also prolongs the Black Starlets’ absence from the FIFA U17 World Cup.

The West African nation last appeared at the global competition in 2017 and had hoped to use the WAFU Zone B championship as a stepping stone towards ending that lengthy wait.

However, missing out on the 2027 U17 AFCON means Ghana will have no opportunity to qualify for the next FIFA U17 World Cup through this campaign.

The setback is particularly significant for a country with a rich history in the age-group competition. Ghana won the FIFA U17 World Cup in 1991 and 1995, establishing themselves among the leading nations in youth football.

Those successes remain a benchmark for the Black Starlets, who must now wait for another qualifying cycle to revive their hopes of returning to the continental and global stages.
