Seko Fofana set to return to Rennes after FC Porto loan ends

Ivorian midfielder Seko Fofana will leave FC Porto at the end of his loan spell, bringing an expected continuation of his time in Portugal to an early close and returning him to Stade Rennais this summer.

Fofana, who joined Porto on loan during the winter transfer window from Rennes, had initially been expected to extend his stay following a strong second half of the campaign.

However, the Portuguese club confirmed on Friday that the 31-year-old will depart once his loan agreement expires.

The announcement was made through FC Porto’s official communication channels, ending speculation that a permanent move could be negotiated between the clubs.

While no detailed explanation has been provided for the decision, financial considerations have been widely cited as a key factor preventing Porto from pursuing a full transfer.

Despite showing encouraging form during his time in Portugal, discussions over a long-term deal did not progress, leading to the decision for the midfielder to return to France at the end of the loan.

Another element that may have influenced the situation is the recent arrival of Franck Haise at Rennes. The former Lens coach is now leading the Ligue 1 side and is expected to reshape the squad as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Reports suggest Haise is looking to build a balanced squad combining experience and technical quality, which could factor into Fofana’s role upon his return to Roazhon Park.

Fofana remains under contract with Rennes until June 2029, leaving the French club with an important decision to make regarding his future.

The midfielder could either be retained as part of the long-term project or made available for transfer in order to manage squad structure and finances.

Although he is due to report back to Rennes, there remains uncertainty over how long he will remain with the club. A potential departure during the transfer window has not been ruled out, depending on offers and the club’s plans for the new season.

For now, the Ivorian international’s immediate future lies back in France, with further decisions expected in the coming weeks as Rennes assess their squad options.
