Poland and Mexico level at half-time after fast start in U20 Women’s World Cup

Poland and Mexico were locked at 1-1 at half-time in their Group A meeting on the second matchday of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The match began at a frantic pace, with Mexico taking the lead after only five minutes when Bartczak turned the ball into her own net.

Poland, playing on home soil, responded almost immediately. Their leading scorer Zwiazek restored parity in the ninth minute, finishing calmly to bring the hosts back into the contest.

The early exchange produced both goals, but neither side was able to add another before the interval. Mexico enjoyed the greater control in possession, completing the first half with 58% of the ball, and showed a clear technical advantage during long spells of play.

Despite that superiority, Poland’s defence held firm after conceding so early. Mexico created pressure through its command of possession, but the home side prevented that control from being converted into a second goal.

At the other end, Zwiazek’s equaliser ensured Poland remained level after a difficult opening period. Her composed finish gave the hosts a swift response to Bartczak’s unfortunate own goal and restored balance to a game that had threatened to move quickly in Mexico’s favour.

The scoreline therefore reflected a first half shaped by two contrasting moments. Mexico made the breakthrough inside five minutes, while Poland needed only four more minutes to erase the deficit. From then on, however, both defences resisted.

Mexico’s 58% possession underlined its influence on the match, but possession alone did not separate the teams. Poland stayed organised enough to keep the score level, while Mexico was unable to find a way through again before the break.

With the teams returning to the dressing rooms at 1-1, the second half remained evenly poised on the scoreboard despite Mexico’s technical dominance. Poland had recovered from the early setback, and Mexico’s advantage in possession had yet to produce a further goal.

The Group A fixture had consequently delivered an open and eventful start, followed by a more controlled spell in which neither defence gave way. Bartczak’s own goal and Zwiazek’s equaliser remained the decisive moments of the opening 45 minutes, leaving Poland and Mexico level at the interval.
