Saudi journalist doubts Egypt's World Cup prospects

Saudi journalist Ali Al-Anzi has cast serious doubt on Egypt’s chances at the 2026 World Cup, warning that the Pharaohs face significant challenges in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Egypt will compete in their fourth World Cup finale, drawn in Group Seven alongside Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand. Speaking on the program “Our Role Is Different,” Al-Anzi expressed deep concerns about the team’s recent form.

“I have major reservations about Egypt’s recent performances, and I don’t believe they will go far,” Al-Anzi said.

He added, “I hope Egypt succeeds led by Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, and Mahmoud Trezeguet, but they suffer from major defensive problems.”

Al-Anzi highlighted another critical issue: goalkeeper instability. “There’s inconsistency in goalkeeping, sometimes Mustafa Shobiir plays, sometimes Mohamed El-Shennawy, so confidence in player selection has become a bit shaken.”

He concluded, “I think things will be difficult for Egypt, though I wish them well.”

Despite his skepticism, fans remain hopeful Egypt can overcome these challenges and surprise critics in North America.
