RS Berkane clinches narrow victory over Zamalek in CAF Cup first leg final
RS Berkane secured a 2-1 win over Zamalek at home in the first leg of the Confederation Cup final on Sunday. Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, the Moroccans faced stiff competition from the Egyptian side, leaving the tie delicately poised for the return leg in Cairo next week, with the away goal rule still in effect.
RS Berkane wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Youssef El Fahli finding the net just 30 seconds into the match after capitalizing on a defensive error by Zamalek.
The early goal set the tone for the home side, who continued to apply pressure, resulting in a penalty awarded to Berkane in the 13th minute after a VAR review confirmed a foul on El Fahli. Burkinabè captain Issoufou Dayo calmly converted from the spot to give Berkane a 1-0 lead.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Zamalek struggled to break down Berkane’s defense until Seifeddine Jaziri pulled one back for the visitors with a well-placed header just after halftime.
The goal injected new life into Zamalek, who pushed forward in search of an equalizer.
However, Berkane remained resolute, with goalkeeper Hamza Hamiani making several crucial saves to preserve their lead.
Despite Zamalek’s late efforts, Berkane held on for a narrow victory, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg.
The result marks a significant milestone for RS Berkane, who will be eager to maintain their advantage when they travel to Egypt for the second leg.
With both teams still in contention for the title, the stage is set for an exciting finale to the CAF Cup.
