Rodri has become one of the most influential figures in Barcelona’s dressing room despite not wearing the captain’s armband, according to Marca.
The Spain midfielder has quickly established himself as a senior voice at the club since arriving last summer, using his experience and personality to help guide a squad containing a number of young players.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick publicly acknowledged last season that his team needed players willing to take responsibility during difficult periods. Raphinha has taken on much of that responsibility this season and also wears the captain’s armband, but Rodri has emerged as another important leader behind the scenes.
His influence was particularly evident on Wednesday, when Rodri, Raphinha and the rest of the team’s captains organised a group lunch following Barcelona’s defeats by Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
The gathering was intended to strengthen team spirit and underlined the role Rodri is playing away from the pitch. Although he is not officially one of the club’s captains, his actions have helped him become one of the dressing room’s most respected voices.
Rodri’s adjustment to life in Catalonia has been rapid. The Madrid-born midfielder received a warm reception from supporters from his first appearance in front of the Barcelona crowd, when he attended the Joan Gamper Trophy match.
He has also earned a prominent place in Flick’s team and is regarded as an essential member of the starting line-up.
Barcelona had appeared to have settled on their midfield options last summer, but the club did not hesitate to consider the opportunity to sign Rodri when it arose. The decision was based on two factors.
Firstly, Barcelona saw the chance to recruit one of the best midfielders in the world. Secondly, they believed he could add experience, character and leadership to a dressing room with many developing players.
His arrival was therefore viewed as more than a purely footballing decision. His record and personality were considered potentially important assets for a young squad in both successful and difficult moments.
The Spain international has delivered on those expectations, taking on the responsibility of setting an example for his team-mates while also becoming a key player on the field.
Barcelona are listed to play Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026.
