Man United boss Michael Carrick hails Kobbie Mainoo’s return ahead of Chelsea clash as ‘good news’

Michael Carrick has described Kobbie Mainoo’s return to Manchester United training as “good news” ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea, raising hopes that the midfielder could be available for selection.

Mainoo has missed United’s last four matches through injury but has resumed training with the first-team squad, giving Carrick a potential boost as his side prepare for a difficult encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The United manager confirmed on Friday that the 21-year-old had taken part in a training session, although his availability for the Chelsea game remains uncertain.

“Good news, Kobbie done a little bit of training yesterday, so he’s back in and around the group, so that’s obviously a positive,” Carrick said.

Mainoo returns after four-match absence

Mainoo’s return to training offers encouragement after an injury forced him to miss several fixtures during a challenging spell for Manchester United.

The midfielder completed United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on October 10 but picked up an injury during the encounter. He subsequently missed the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid three days later.

Carrick initially remained uncertain about when the academy graduate would return to action, with the manager estimating on October 20 that he could need another 10 days to recover.

Mainoo also missed the subsequent matches against Como and Bournemouth before making his return to training this week.

His progress will now determine whether he can feature against Chelsea, either in the starting line-up or among the substitutes, or whether he will require more time to regain full fitness.

United will be keen to avoid rushing the midfielder back before he is ready, particularly given the importance of having him available for the remainder of the campaign.

Carrick seeks midfield boost

Mainoo’s potential return could give Carrick another option in midfield as Manchester United attempt to improve their results.

The midfielder has developed into an important part of United’s plans, and his availability would provide additional competition for places as the team prepare for Saturday’s fixture.

Carrick will assess Mainoo’s condition following his return to group training before deciding whether to include him in the travelling squad.

The 21-year-old’s involvement would also offer United another option in possession as they look to compete against Chelsea in a demanding Premier League encounter.

Carlos Baleba has also recovered from an ankle injury and returned to full fitness, providing Carrick with another midfield option as he considers his selection for the weekend.

United seek response against Chelsea

Manchester United head into the Stamford Bridge encounter under pressure to improve their form after a difficult opening to the season.

The club have recorded just two victories in 12 matches across all competitions and sit 16th in the Premier League standings.

Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea therefore presents an opportunity for United to secure a positive result, with Carrick hoping to have as many options as possible available.

While Mainoo’s return to training represents an encouraging development, his participation against Chelsea will depend on his fitness and the manager’s assessment ahead of kick-off.
