Rodri’s Barcelona switch reshapes the balance of power with Real Madrid

Rodri’s move to Barcelona has been described as far more than a high-profile transfer, with Spanish journalist Ramon Besa saying the midfielder’s decision has strengthened the club’s image and damaged Real Madrid’s standing in the recruitment market.

The Spain international joined Barcelona after a direct and intense contest between Spain’s two biggest clubs for the world’s leading holding midfielder. Despite the appeal of Real Madrid, Rodri chose the Barcelona project led by manager Hansi Flick and the ambition of the club’s La Masia players.

Besa, speaking on the Cadena SER programme Que T’hi Jugues!, said the signing had significance beyond Rodri’s ability on the pitch.

“Rodri is an excellent addition to a big club because, in the eyes of other clubs, he improves the club’s image and represents a major step forward,” Besa said.

The journalist believes the transfer’s greatest impact could be psychological and competitive. Barcelona have not merely secured an elite midfielder; they have also persuaded a player being pursued by Real Madrid to choose them instead.

“It is an exceptional move from the perspective of the transfer market because, in addition to what he can offer as a player, he is someone you attract from Real Madrid and make them say that he preferred you over them,” Besa said.

That element of the deal gives Barcelona an important source of confidence as they attempt to build a team capable of competing for major honours. Rodri’s arrival is also viewed as a crucial sporting decision because it fills a position Besa believes the squad had been lacking.

“For this team to be ambitious, it needs clearly defined positions. The first player to arrive was the goalkeeper, and now we were missing a holding midfielder who played a decisive role. Then Rodri appeared,” he said.

Barcelona can now identify a central structure around which the rest of the team can be developed. Besa pointed to the club’s goalkeeper, young central defender Pau Cubarsi and Rodri as the key components of that foundation.

“The basis of any team can be built around this foundation. Barcelona now have a good goalkeeper, an outstanding central defender such as Cubarsi, and a holding midfielder like Rodri. You therefore have the spine of the team,” Besa said.

The midfielder’s arrival is consequently being viewed at Barcelona as the beginning of a more ambitious phase, rather than simply another addition to the squad. It provides the club with a stronger platform from which to pursue domestic success and attempt to recover from its disappointment in Europe.

Besa also outlined the relationship he sees between Barcelona’s domestic performance and its continental ambitions.

“Winning La Liga makes it easier to win the Champions League,” he said.
