Rodri’s Barcelona move set to revive the club’s iconic midfield formula
Rodri has chosen Barcelona over Real Madrid, with the Manchester City midfielder’s proposed move to the Catalan club reportedly close to being formally completed in the coming days.
Several reports on Sunday said Barcelona and Manchester City had reached a full agreement over the transfer of the Spain international.
A report published on Monday by the official Ballon d’Or website outlined why Rodri is said to have favoured Barcelona. The midfielder reportedly views wearing the Barcelona shirt as the ideal opportunity to display the full range of his game.
The move would also give Rodri the chance to take on the role once occupied by Sergio Busquets. The two players share the ability to anchor a defence, understand the development of a match from the first pass and control the movement of the ball when under pressure.
More than a decade ago, Busquets, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta transformed European football through their supreme command of possession and rhythm. Their midfield was central to Barcelona’s most successful modern era and helped establish a playing style based on technical control and sustained pressure.
Barcelona, now managed by German coach Hansi Flick, are hoping to create a comparable dynamic with a new midfield featuring Rodri, Pedri and Dani Olmo.
The three players possess several technical and physical qualities associated with the Busquets-Xavi-Iniesta combination of Barcelona’s golden period. Together, they would provide the main attributes demanded by the modern game.
Rodri would offer tactical discipline, physical strength and the ability to dictate the tempo from deep midfield. Pedri would bring spatial awareness and smooth distribution, while Dani Olmo would provide forward movement and runs into the spaces between the lines.
The partnership has already shown its effectiveness by helping Spain win the World Cup, in the same way Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets did in 2010.
Flick would also have high-quality alternatives available, with young midfielders including Gavi, Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado adding depth and competition within the system.
According to the Ballon d’Or website, Rodri’s preference for Barcelona is based on the belief that the club’s tactical model naturally fits his understanding of football.
After reaching the highest level of the game both individually and as part of a successful team, Rodri would return to La Liga to lead the side that inspired his professional development.
His arrival would give Flick’s Barcelona a balanced midfield once again, combining defensive structure, technical quality and attacking movement as the club seeks to begin another period of success.
