Milan step up €50m move for Strasbourg winger Diego Moreira

AC Milan are in the final stages of negotiations to sign Strasbourg winger Diego Moreira in a deal worth about €50m, after RB Leipzig failed to reach an agreement for the Belgium international.

Several sources report that the Italian club have reached an understanding with both Moreira and Strasbourg and are now working through the final details of the transfer. A medical is also being arranged, with Sky Sport Italia reporting that it is scheduled for Tuesday, 18 August.

The move has advanced quickly after Milan made a late approach, assisted by football agent Jorge Mendes. Their intervention has allowed them to move ahead of Leipzig, who had been pushing to complete the signing.

However, Sky Sport Germany reported that Leipzig were still some way from reaching an agreement with Strasbourg before Milan’s progress.

Moreira, who turned 22 earlier this month, had previously been linked with a move to Serie A through Roma. The cost of that deal was considered too high, despite Roma submitting an offer worth €35m, plus a further €10m in potential bonuses. That proposal also included a clause giving Strasbourg 10% of any future transfer fee received for the player.

The latest details have been reported by a number of sources, including transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Sky Sport Italia, Sportitalia and Mediaset. Their reports all indicate that Milan are finalising the agreement and preparing for Moreira’s medical examination.

There remains some variation in the reported value of the deal. Football Italia says the overall package is expected to be worth about €45m-€50m, including add-ons and a percentage of a future sale fee. Romano and Sportitalia, however, report that the transfer is worth €50m before bonuses.

Moreira primarily operates as a left winger but is also capable of playing on the right when required. He spent last season with Strasbourg, making 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing nine assists.

Chelsea sold Moreira to Strasbourg for €8.5m in the summer of 2024 but retained a buy-back option. The Premier League club do not appear keen to activate that clause, leaving the way clear for Milan to pursue a permanent deal with the French club.

Moreira has made four senior appearances for Belgium. Before committing to the Belgium first team, he represented Portugal at youth international level. His move to Strasbourg followed his time at Chelsea, and his performances during the previous campaign have now prompted interest from several clubs across Europe.

Milan’s agreement with Strasbourg would represent a significant investment in a player who has only recently established himself at senior international level. The Rossoneri are now focused on completing the remaining contractual details before Moreira undergoes his medical and the transfer can be formally concluded.
