Coventry land Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi in €10.5m Nottingham Forest switch
Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi has joined Coventry from Nottingham Forest for €10.5m, giving the Premier League club a new centre-forward for the 2026-27 season.
Awoniyi, 29, moves between two clubs in England’s top flight after four seasons at Forest. The Ilorin-born forward joined Forest from Union Berlin in July 2022 for €20.5m and has since built up 90 Premier League appearances, scoring 21 goals and providing six assists.
His record across England’s top division places him among Coventry’s most experienced attacking additions. Awoniyi has scored at a rate of one goal every 159 minutes in the Premier League, while his Bundesliga return stands at 21 goals in 64 appearances during his time in Germany.
The striker’s career has also taken him through Belgium and the Netherlands. He made 52 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League, scoring 14 goals and registering six assists, while he scored twice in 18 Eredivisie matches.
Awoniyi began his senior career with Liverpool, joining the club from Imperial Academy in 2015. He spent much of his early Liverpool career on loan, with spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, KAA Gent and Mainz before establishing himself at Union Berlin.
His move to Forest followed a productive period in Berlin. Awoniyi scored 21 goals in 64 Bundesliga appearances for Union, having initially joined the German club from Liverpool in July 2021 for €8.55m after a loan spell there during the 2020-21 campaign.
At international age-group level, Awoniyi won the Under-17 World Cup with Nigeria in 2013. He also helped Nigeria’s Under-20 and Under-23 sides win their respective Africa Cup competitions in 2015, scoring three goals for the Under-20 team during that tournament.
The right-footed forward stands 1.83m tall and arrives at Coventry with experience in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Belgian top-flight football and European competition. His career record also includes two goals in six Conference League appearances and one goal in six DFB-Pokal matches.
Awoniyi’s transfer from Nottingham Forest to Coventry was completed on 17 August 2026.
