Napoli sign Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile on season-long loan

Napoli have signed Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.

The Italian club will pay €3m to borrow the France international for the 2026-27 season, as they prepare to strengthen their defence under experienced manager Massimiliano Allegri.

The agreement represents another step in Chelsea’s efforts to reduce the size of their squad during the current summer transfer window. The London club are seeking to lower the number of players available to head coach Xabi Alonso before a season in which they will not compete in any European competition.

Badiashile, 25, joined Chelsea from Monaco in January 2023. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the centre-back has made 71 appearances for the club and scored two goals.

However, his involvement declined significantly last season, when he featured in only 16 matches for Chelsea. He had subsequently become one of the players expected to leave Stamford Bridge as Alonso reshapes the squad.

Napoli have identified central defence as one of their main priorities during the transfer window, and Badiashile’s arrival gives Allegri an additional option in that area ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea have already allowed Trevoh Chalobah to depart on a permanent basis after selling him to Como. Axel Disasi could also leave, with West Ham United interested in signing the defender.

Badiashile’s move to Napoli continues the process of trimming Chelsea’s squad while giving the French defender the opportunity to play more regularly in Italy. The loan includes a purchase option, meaning Napoli will have the chance to retain him permanently after the 2026-27 season.

Napoli are preparing for their first season under Allegri, who has been tasked with guiding the club through the new campaign. Recruitment at centre-back has been treated as a key objective, and Badiashile becomes the latest addition to their plans for that position.

For Chelsea, the deal further reduces the number of senior defenders on their books as Alonso assesses the squad at his disposal. Badiashile’s limited playing time last season had placed his future at the club under scrutiny, while the departures of Chalobah and the possible sale of Disasi point to further changes in defence.

The Frenchman now moves to Napoli initially for one season, with the Italian side retaining the option to complete a permanent transfer once the loan period ends.
