Mourinho inherits Real Madrid’s unresolved centre-back headache before Espanyol clash

Real Madrid begin their competitive season against Espanyol on Saturday, 22 August, with Jose Mourinho facing an immediate defensive problem that has troubled the club through several managerial regimes.

The match at 21:30 is expected to mark the start of the Spanish giants’ campaign, but their preparations have been overshadowed by a lack of options in central defence. Despite activity in the transfer market, the longstanding weakness has not been fully addressed.

The issue has followed Real Madrid through the tenures of Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. It now presents Mourinho with the same challenge as he prepares for his first official match in charge.

Real Madrid lost Austria international David Alaba last summer, with the club signing France defender Ibrahima Konate as his replacement. However, that single addition has not been enough to solve the problem, and Mourinho has made clear from the beginning of his tenure that he wants another centre-back.

The manager has repeatedly requested extra defensive cover, but he could have only three senior central defenders available for the meeting with Espanyol, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Those options are Germany international Antonio Rudiger, young Spain defender Dean Huijsen and new arrival Konate. The club’s remaining alternatives are unavailable or are not expected to feature.

Raul Asencio and Brazil defender Eder Militao are both sidelined by injury, while Mourinho is not relying on defenders from Real Madrid’s academy. Militao is also expected to remain out for a lengthy period, further reducing the manager’s room for manoeuvre.

That leaves Mourinho with a difficult decision over the defensive partnership he will select for the opening fixture. Konate has played only one match alongside Huijsen, against Schalke 04, leaving their understanding at senior level relatively untested.

Huijsen’s performances have improved compared with the early stages of his time at the club, but his displays continue to raise questions. The young defender remains one of the options available to Mourinho, yet the current circumstances mean there is little margin for error.

Rudiger provides considerable experience, although his performances during pre-season have created more uncertainty than reassurance. With the new campaign about to begin, Real Madrid’s centre-back department appears short of both numbers and stability.

The situation puts added pressure on Mourinho before the visit of Espanyol. His immediate task will be to construct a reliable central defensive pairing from limited resources, while also finding a way to protect a back line that has not been reinforced sufficiently.

For Real Madrid, the first match of the season therefore represents more than an opportunity to make a winning start. It will also provide an early test of whether Mourinho can manage the club’s unresolved defensive weakness, at least until further cover becomes available.
