Mourinho backs Vinicius Junior to rediscover form but makes no guarantee over starting place

Vinicius Junior has the backing of Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese coach attempts to restore the Brazil forward to his best form, but the player has not been assured a regular place in the starting line-up.

Vinicius missed Real Madrid’s La Liga meeting with Valencia, as he had in the Clasico, after being sent off against Villarreal. The suspension meant he was unavailable for the club’s domestic league matches during the final month of competition.

His absence has prompted questions about his position within the team, particularly because he started two Champions League matches during the same period.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Vinicius understands that he has lost his status as an automatic starter and is no longer considered undroppable. However, the report says he has felt the full support of Mourinho and the Real Madrid board in recent days.

Mourinho’s main priority is reportedly to help the Brazilian regain the level that made him a decisive player capable of changing matches. Vinicius had become one of Real Madrid’s leading attacking weapons after joining from Flamengo.

The relationship between the forward and Mourinho’s coaching staff is described as positive, with clear understanding and regular communication between the two sides.

That represents a contrast with Vinicius’ relationship with Xabi Alonso last season, when disagreements over communication and mutual understanding emerged between the player and the coach.

Mourinho has adopted a direct approach with Vinicius, both in private conversations and in his public comments, according to the report. His intention is to provide the confidence and support required for the player to recover his best form.

At the same time, the manager has made clear that returning to his previous level will require further work and time.

Mourinho’s support does not amount to a promise that Vinicius will immediately return to the starting XI. The Portuguese coach is focused on restoring the player’s influence on the pitch while keeping competition for places open to every member of the squad.
