Marumo Gallants sign 13 players and overhaul backroom staff before new PSL season

Marumo Gallants have announced 13 new signings and a revamped technical structure as they attempt to reset after last season’s struggle in the Betway Premiership.

The club, who finished 14th in the league in the previous campaign, confirmed the arrivals at an unveiling in Sandton, Johannesburg, ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Head coach Phuti Mohafe has been brought in to lead the team, with former professionals Musa Bilankulu and Mathome Mathiane appointed as his assistants. Paul Matthews has also joined the Limpopo side in the key role of sporting director.

President Abram Sello used the event to present the new-look squad and indicated that Gallants are not yet finished in the transfer market before the window closes.

Thirteen new faces through the door

Gallants have moved aggressively to strengthen across the pitch, confirming the signings of Emile Lako, Thokozani Lukhele, Prince Manku, Mlungisi Sikakane, Patrick Motsoeneng, Kgomotso Marebane, Thato Mohlomme, Samkele Sihlali, Thabang Sesinyi, Thabiso Mkwanazi, Onalenna Lepelesana, Lebogang Button and Thulani Zandamela.

No contract details or transfer fees were disclosed, but the volume of signings underlines the club’s intention to avoid another season spent near the bottom of the table.

Sello added that further additions are possible before the deadline, with the club still active in the market.

Trialists still under consideration

Two players – Ntando Nkosi and Thando Buthelezi – have recently been assessed by the new technical team as potential recruits.

Both underwent evaluation with the squad, but Gallants confirmed that neither has yet been offered a contract, leaving their futures unresolved as the start of the campaign approaches.

Key players retained on new deals

Alongside the influx of new signings, Gallants have moved to secure continuity by extending the stays of several established squad members.

The club confirmed that contracts have been renewed for Edgar Manaka, Kagiso Mlambo, Tshepo Rikhotso, Khumbulani Ncube, Bheki Mabuza, Katlego Otladisa, Monde Mphambaniso, Kamohelo Sithole, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Tebogo Motloung.

By combining a core of retained players with a substantial group of new arrivals, Gallants are attempting to re-balance the squad after a difficult 2025/26 season.

Sundowns opener postponed

Gallants were scheduled to begin their Betway Premiership campaign against champions Mamelodi Sundowns this Saturday, but the fixture has been postponed.

No new date for the match has yet been confirmed, leaving Mohafe and his staff with additional time to integrate the 13 new signings and finalise preparations before the team’s first competitive outing of the 2026/27 season.
