Manchester United held by Leeds as Brighton cruise to five-goal Palace win

Manchester United’s difficult week ended with a 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday, leaving further pressure on manager Michael Carrick after Bryan Mbeumo’s fourth Premier League goal of the season was cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

United arrived at Elland Road having won only two of their previous nine matches in all competitions. Their problems had intensified in midweek when Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s hierarchy following a 2-0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.

The Argentina centre-back said Carrick, in his first full season in charge at Old Trafford, had been left with an under-strength squad following an underwhelming summer transfer window.

Carrick said on Friday that United had “moved on” from the issue and Martinez was included in the starting line-up. However, he was replaced at half-time by Morocco international Noussair Mazraoui.

The match began with plenty of commitment but little attacking quality. Leeds produced the first effort on target in the 26th minute, when United goalkeeper Senne Lammens tipped a Nico Elvedi header over the bar after it had bounced off the turf and threatened the top corner.

Mbeumo then headed wide from a fine Youri Tielemans cross before sending a tame effort straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Cameroon forward made amends in the 35th minute. Tielemans delivered another low cross from the right and Mbeumo steered the ball into the bottom corner to put United ahead.

Leeds responded quickly after the interval and equalised in the 51st minute. Tarik Muharemovic headed the ball on from a corner, allowing Calvert-Lewin to control it on his chest before finishing at full stretch.

The hosts took control thereafter and largely restricted United to counter-attacking opportunities. Carrick introduced Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha as he searched for a winning goal, but neither side could find a decisive second.

The result leaves United 13th in the table, with only one win from their past seven matches. Leeds are seventh.

Brighton hit Palace for five

Brighton moved above Arsenal into second place, at least temporarily, after overwhelming Crystal Palace 5-0.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side scored three times inside the opening 10 minutes. Jaydee Canvot turned the ball into his own net, before Diego Gomez produced a spectacular strike from the halfway line. Yasin Ayari then added Brighton’s third.

Charalampos Kostoulas extended the lead after the break, with substitute Jack Hinshelwood completing the scoring.

Arsenal, six points behind Manchester City, face Nottingham Forest in the late-afternoon kick-off. They need victory to close the gap on City, who have won all seven of their league matches this season.

Enzo Maresca’s team have maintained that run despite off-field distractions, with the club charged with multiple breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth secured their first league win of the season by beating 10-man Sunderland 2-0, with Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scoring.
