Mamelodi Sundowns agree two-year deal for former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele

Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed terms to sign former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele on a free transfer, with the move expected to be completed imminently.

The 29-year-old will join the South African champions on a two-year contract, with an option to extend, as the club strengthens its midfield options for the coming season.

Cele’s departure from Kaizer Chiefs was confirmed on Monday evening after the two parties agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent. That decision cleared the way for Sundowns to move quickly for the midfielder.

Cele joined Kaizer Chiefs in January 2025 following almost a decade in European football. During that period, he represented Real SC, Benfica B and Cova da Piedade in Portugal, before continuing his career in Poland and Russia.

He quickly became a popular figure among Chiefs supporters during his season and a half at the club. However, he was omitted from the team’s pre-season tour of Spain and was subsequently considered surplus to requirements after losing his place in the club’s plans.

Kaizer Chiefs have since begun moving in a different direction in midfield. The club recruited Tanzania international Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from AZAM FC, while Cele did not feature in any matches after the arrival of the new signing.

Sundowns’ agreement with Cele is expected to be formally announced by Masandawana shortly. The move follows the club’s signing of Deano van Rooyen on a free transfer earlier this week, after his departure from Orlando Pirates.

The need to reinforce midfield has become particularly significant for Sundowns following the untimely and tragic passing of Jayden Adams after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Cele’s arrival is intended to help reduce the workload on established midfielders such as Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende during the season.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso already has several other options available in the area, including Bathusi Aubaas, Sphelele Mkhulise, Gomolemo Kekana and Tsiki Ntsabeleng. Those players can operate in a variety of midfield roles, but Sundowns have nevertheless identified the position as one requiring additional depth.

Cele’s move will mark a return to the domestic game after his time abroad and his spell with Kaizer Chiefs. Sundowns now need only to complete the final formalities before confirming the midfielder’s arrival.
