Morocco’s Ayoub El Kaabi crowned Greece’s top scorer despite injury setback
Moroccan striker Ayoub El Kaabi has been crowned the Greek Super League’s top scorer for the 2025/26 season after finishing the campaign with 18 goals for Olympiacos.
The 33-year-old received the individual award on Monday at the 45th annual ceremony organised by the Panhellenic Association of Professional Footballers (PSAPP), recognising his outstanding scoring contribution throughout the season.
El Kaabi finished one goal ahead of AEK Athens forward Luka Jovic, who registered 17 league goals, to claim the prestigious distinction.
Moroccan striker beats Jovic to top scorer award
According to Greek public broadcaster ERT, El Kaabi scored against 11 of the 13 other teams in the division, with Aris and Volos the only sides against whom he failed to find the net.
The award further underlines the Moroccan international’s importance to Olympiacos since arriving at the Greek club in 2023.
His goalscoring exploits have established him as one of the club’s key attacking figures, adding another individual honour to an already successful spell in Greece.
El Kaabi provides encouraging injury update
The Moroccan also attracted attention at Monday’s ceremony after appearing without crutches, almost two months after suffering a serious leg injury.
El Kaabi fractured his left tibia and fibula during Olympiacos’ 1-1 draw against Volos on September 5. The injury occurred following a collision with goalkeeper Marios Siampanis shortly before half-time and required surgery.
Speaking after receiving the award, the striker expressed his pride in the achievement while offering an encouraging update on his recovery.
“I am very proud to have won the top scorer award last season,” he said, according to Gazzetta Greece.
“I’m coming back soon to help my team again, and I hope that by the end of the championship we will have scored enough goals to become champions.”
Despite the positive signs, El Kaabi remains in rehabilitation, with Olympiacos yet to announce a confirmed date for his return to competitive action.
Moroccan forward adds to European achievements
The latest recognition adds to an impressive list of achievements for the Morocco international since joining Olympiacos in 2023.
El Kaabi played a crucial role in the Greek side’s historic 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League triumph, scoring the decisive goal against Fiorentina in the 116th minute of the final.
His strike secured the first major European club trophy for a Greek team, while his 11 goals also made him the competition’s leading scorer.
His continued absence is a concern for Olympiacos and the Moroccan national team, with the forward having established himself as an important attacking option for both sides.
