Mama Joy left out of 2026 World Cup fan list as Minister selection sparks backlash

South African football personality Mama Joy Chauke has voiced deep disappointment after being excluded from a government-backed list of supporters set to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a decision that has stirred debate across the country’s sporting circles.

The outspoken fan, long associated with South African football on the global stage, said she was shocked to learn that she would not be part of the travelling group selected by Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.

“It hurts that the minister claims he can’t take me because R800 000 was spent on me, yet a supporter who was with me and for whom the same amount was spent is on the list heading to Mexico,” she said.

Chauke, who has built a reputation as one of the most visible and vocal supporters of South African sport at major international tournaments, said she felt unfairly treated and sidelined despite her long-standing involvement in promoting the national team abroad.

She added that her exclusion was particularly painful given what she described as her efforts to secure her place in the travelling delegation. According to her, the decision contradicts her contribution and visibility in global sporting spaces, where she has become a familiar figure among fans and media.

“I was fighting for this opportunity,” she suggested, adding that she now feels penalised despite her prominence and commitment to supporting the team.

The controversy comes as attention shifts to South Africa’s preparations for the tournament, with the national side—South Africa national football team—drawn into a challenging Group A alongside hosts Mexico, South Korea and the Czech Republic at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, part of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While the government has yet to publicly expand on the selection criteria for the fan delegation, the decision has already ignited discussions about transparency, fairness, and the role of symbolic supporters in national sporting representation.

For now, Mama Joy’s absence from the travelling contingent has added an unexpected off-field storyline to South Africa’s World Cup build-up—one that blends sport, identity, and public expectation in equal measure.
