Macbeth Sibaya considered for Marumo Gallants technical team

Macbeth Sibaya has emerged as a possible addition to the Marumo Gallants technical team as Ronnie Kanalelo prepares to take charge of the Betway Premiership club.

Kanalelo is expected to be formally announced as the successor to Phuti Mohafe, who was dismissed along with assistant coach Musa Bilankulu after Gallants’ difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign.

Although the appointment of former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Kanalelo has already been reported, discussions are continuing over the coaching staff that will work alongside him.

The Siya crew understands that Sibaya is Kanalelo’s preferred choice to join the technical team.

A source close to the situation said the former Bafana Bafana midfielder’s name had been raised during talks about the club’s new coaching structure.

“Kanalelo has spoken about Macbeth Sibaya. His name has come up in the discussions, and he is someone he would prefer to have as part of his technical team,” the source told the Siya crew.

“He has found a technical team already at the club, so the idea is to see how they can work together. But Sibaya is someone who is in the plans.”

Sibaya may not join the setup immediately when Kanalelo begins his tenure, but the incoming coach is understood to want to find a way to bring him into the group as Gallants attempt to recover from their poor start.

“He might not be there to start immediately, but he is in the plans. The club is looking at different ways of turning the situation around, and this is one of the things that has been discussed,” the source added.

Kanalelo, 55, was most recently in charge of Namibian champions African Stars. He guided the club into the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after they beat Gabonese side AS Mangasport at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Tshwane.

He stayed in Mzansi after African Stars’ continental commitments to complete negotiations with Gallants.

Sibaya would bring experience in coaching and player development to the proposed technical team. He has worked at several levels of the game, including with FC Ravens, where he has continued to develop young players.

The former midfielder has also been an assistant coach at Durban City and managed SuperSport United’s reserve team. He also spent time working in talent development at the KZN Academy.

Gallants are seeking a swift change in results, having failed to win any of their first six league matches. They have lost four and drawn two, leaving the Free State-based club bottom of the Betway Premiership table.

Their latest defeat came against AmaZulu FC on Saturday.

Sundra Govinder and Trevor Mathiane are expected to remain part of the technical setup around the incoming head coach, although further additions have not been ruled out.
