Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit pushes for bigger role at Hamburg after lively cameo against Frankfurt
Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit is pushing for more playing time at Hamburger SV after making a positive impression during Sunday’s 3-1 Bundesliga defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt.
According to Hamburger Abendblatt, the 19-year-old winger has strengthened his case for a bigger role following an encouraging substitute appearance at Deutsche Bank Park.
Since returning from a lengthy injury layoff in early October, Røssing-Lelesiit has featured in four of Hamburg’s five competitive matches, although his involvement has largely been restricted to brief appearances from the bench.
However, his introduction against Frankfurt brought renewed energy to Hamburg’s attack. The youngster created several dangerous situations, including an opportunity to reduce the deficit before testing goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with a curling effort in the closing stages.
He also demonstrated his defensive commitment by making an important clearance against Jonathan Burkardt during stoppage time.
Head coach Merlin Polzin has also experimented with his positioning, previously deploying him as a right wing-back before using him in a more advanced attacking midfield role against Frankfurt.
The latter position allowed the winger to showcase his dribbling ability and attacking creativity more effectively.
His performance has strengthened his chances of receiving additional minutes when Hamburg host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday.
Although a first start of the season remains uncertain, Røssing-Lelesiit could be rewarded with an earlier introduction as he looks to establish himself in Polzin’s plans.
