Liverpool held by Nottingham Forest as Vitor Munoz earns second straight draw

Liverpool remain without a Premier League victory after twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Vitor Munoz scoring a late equaliser to rescue the home side.

Nottingham Forest took the lead through Dan Ndoye before Liverpool levelled when Alexander Isak finished from Cody Gakpo’s cutback early in the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White restored the visitors’ advantage from the penalty spot, but Munoz struck with fewer than five minutes remaining to ensure Liverpool avoided defeat.

The result gives Liverpool a second successive draw after they shared the points with Newcastle United in their previous league match. Their difficult start to the season therefore continues, while Forest were unable to respond to successive defeats by Leeds United in league and cup action.

Forest made the brighter start and nearly went ahead during the opening quarter of an hour. James McAtee sent a cross-field delivery towards Dan Ndoye, who met it with a header from a tight angle, but the ball drifted wide.

Ndoye continued to pose a threat and opened the scoring midway through the first half. Morgan Gibbs-White laid the ball into his path, allowing the forward to move in from the left side of the area before lifting a finish into the bottom corner.

Liverpool thought they had drawn level shortly after the half-hour mark. Jeremie Frimpong won possession high up the pitch with a determined challenge and set up Florian Wirtz, who found the net.

However, the goal was ruled out after a Video Assistant Referee review found Frimpong had been offside in the build-up.

Liverpool responded strongly after the interval and equalised during the opening quarter of the second half. Gakpo beat the offside trap with a forward run before cutting the ball back towards the far post, where Isak arrived to complete the move with a first-time finish.

Forest regained the lead 10 minutes later. Neco Williams advanced into the penalty area on an overlapping run down the left and was brought down by Alisson, giving the visitors a penalty. Gibbs-White sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-1.

Liverpool introduced Ryan Gravenberch, Trey Nyoni and Ronald Araujo during the final 10 minutes as they searched for another comeback.

Their pressure eventually paid off. Munoz received the ball on the near side of the box, turned sharply and fired into the far corner to score his first goal for the club and secure a 2-2 draw.

The result leaves Liverpool still searching for their first Premier League win of the campaign, while Forest take a point from a match in which they led twice.

Liverpool’s next three fixtures are away to Ipswich Town, at home to Fulham and away to Bournemouth. Nottingham Forest will host Tottenham Hotspur, visit Aston Villa and then welcome Coventry City.
