Lens edge out Paris Saint-Germain to deny them a French Super Cup treble

Lens defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 to win the French Super Cup, ending their opponents’ hopes of completing a historic run of major honours.

The result came only days after Paris Saint-Germain had won the European Super Cup against Aston Villa. Their defeat by Lens means they have now missed out on the chance to claim a quintuple, having already lost the Coupe de France and the French Super Cup.

Paris Saint-Germain won Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League last season, before adding the European Super Cup at the start of the current campaign. They can now complete a four-trophy haul only by winning the Intercontinental Cup.

Florian Thauvin scored the decisive goal for Lens in the 32nd minute. He finished from a low cross by Mateo Oduol, guiding the ball into the net to put Lens ahead.

The match produced two red cards, one for each side. Lens defender Kyllian Antonio was sent off in the 39th minute after a strong challenge on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Maghnes Akliouche.

Paris Saint-Germain substitute Nuno Mendes was also dismissed late in the game. The Portugal international received his red card in the 87th minute following another forceful challenge on a Lens player.

Saudi Arabia international Saud Abdulhamid played the entire match for Lens and made history by becoming the first Saudi player to win the French Super Cup. He had previously become the first Saudi player to lift the Coupe de France.

Lens also won the Coupe de France last season, beating Nice in the final. Their latest success gives them another major domestic trophy at Paris Saint-Germain’s expense.

For Paris Saint-Germain, the defeat brings an abrupt end to hopes of matching a six-trophy season and then completing a quintuple. Despite their success in Ligue 1, the UEFA Champions League and the European Super Cup, they were unable to add the French Super Cup to their collection.

Paris Saint-Germain will begin their Ligue 1 campaign against Rennes in the opening round on Sunday, 23 August. The match will provide the club with an immediate opportunity to respond after losing the trophy to Lens and to begin their domestic title defence.
