Kylian Mbappe opens up on Cameroon snub

Real Madrid returned to winning form with a composed 2-0 victory over already-relegated Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu, but much of the spotlight fell on a mixed night for Kylian Mbappé, who was greeted with whistles from sections of the home support on his return from injury.

With both sides already settled in the table, Madrid guaranteed second place while Oviedo were confirmed to finish 20th, leaving pride as the only real motivation in the fixture.

The hosts almost struck early when Gonzalo García burst to the byline and picked out Franco Mastantuono, whose close-range effort was denied.

Trent Alexander-Arnold later injected urgency with a powerful strike that flew narrowly wide, while Brahim Díaz dragged an effort off target.

Vinícius Júnior also failed to make proper contact from a teasing cross as Madrid gradually turned dominance into pressure.

Oviedo, however, spurned the clearest opening of the half when Nacho Vidal fired over from close range after a fluid move.

The visitors were punished just before the break when Díaz dispossessed deep in Oviedo territory and teed up García, who calmly slotted home to give Madrid a 1-0 advantage.

After the interval, the tempo remained uneven, though the Bernabéu rose to its feet to welcome veteran midfielder Santi Cazorla onto the pitch.

Oviedo nearly responded through Alberto Reina, who miscued at the far post, while Álvaro Carreras was denied by Aarón Escandell in a one-on-one situation. Vidal again came close but dragged another effort wide, compounding a frustrating evening for the visitors.

The game shifted again with 21 minutes remaining as Mbappé entered the action, immediately attracting audible whistles from parts of the stadium despite his clear intent to make an impact.

His presence added edge to Madrid’s attack, but it was substitute Jude Bellingham who settled matters with 11 minutes left, gliding past his marker before drilling a precise finish into the corner for 2-0.

Thibaut Courtois ensured a clean sheet with a sharp late save from Haissem Hassan’s curling attempt as Madrid closed out a controlled response to their recent setback against Barcelona, extending a strong run at home and restoring momentum heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
