Kompany recovering in hospital but no clear return date, says Bayern assistant Danks

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is improving in hospital after collapsing at a training session, but assistant coach Aaron Danks says there is still no firm prognosis for his return.

Kompany became unwell on Friday while watching Bayern’s reserve team train. He collapsed during the session and required medical attention after battling a viral infection. The club’s medical staff had advised him to rest.

The 39-year-old is undergoing thorough examinations and remains under medical care. Bayern’s coaching staff are taking charge of training and match preparations until further notice.

Danks visited Kompany in hospital before speaking ahead of Bayern’s German Cup second-round match against Magdeburg. He said the head coach was in good spirits, but cautioned against putting a timescale on his recovery.

“I popped in to see Vincent briefly yesterday; he’s in good spirits. It looks as though things are improving day by day. There’s no definitive prognosis. He’s very calm and is being given plenty of time to recover,” Danks said.

The former Arsenal coach added that their conversation had not focused on Bayern’s upcoming match or tactical plans.

“We had some good chats, but they had nothing to do with football or tactics. He asked how we were getting on,” Danks said.

Bayern are also managing fitness concerns involving Jamal Musiala and Manuel Neuer.

Musiala missed the Champions League meeting with Arsenal after suffering a muscle fibre tear. Neuer, meanwhile, has been dealing with a foot injury and was left out of the squad for Bayern’s recent Champions League matches.

The goalkeeper has yet to resume full training with the first-team squad, while Bayern have not yet established whether either player will be available for the match against Magdeburg.

“It’s still a bit too early for Manuel Neuer and Jamal Musiala. The players had their treatment yesterday, and we’ll have to wait and see. We still need to speak to the doctors and then see who’s available,” Danks said.

He did provide more encouraging news on Minjae Kim and Aleksandar Pavlovic, saying both players were closer to returning to fitness.

“Minjae Kim and Aleksandar Pavlovic are certainly a bit closer to being fit,” he added.
