Pape Gueye has publicly put himself forward as a contender for the 2026 African Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded in Lagos, Nigeria, on 7 December.
The Villarreal midfielder said he believes he has a genuine chance of winning the prize after a strong season with both his club and Senegal.
Speaking during an interview for Canal+ Sport Afrique’s Talents d’Afrique, Gueye highlighted his recent achievements and said: “I have done quite a few good things.”
The 27-year-old has won 48 caps for Senegal and scored seven international goals. He was named the best African player in the Spanish championship last season, adding to his case for recognition at continental level.
Gueye also scored the only goal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. However, the result was later overturned by the Appeals Jury of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which ruled in favour of Morocco.
The final outcome of that dispute could yet have an impact on the African Ballon d’Or race. A ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), expected at the end of November, may influence the jury responsible for deciding the award.
Gueye already has public backing from Villarreal team-mate Nicolas Pepe. Speaking to DAZN in mid-October, the Cote d’Ivoire international said Gueye would be a deserving winner.
“If he wins it, it is totally deserved,” Pepe said.
The award ceremony in Lagos will take place before the CAS verdict is expected, leaving the decision over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final as a potentially important factor in the judging process.
