Karim Matmour proposed for Algeria coaching staff by Antar Yahia

Karim Matmour has been proposed for a role on Brahim Hemdani’s Algeria coaching staff, according to journalist Chouaib Kahoul of El Khabar.

The former Algeria winger, who won 30 international caps and scored two goals, is the latest ex-international to be linked with a place in the set-up. The position being considered for Matmour has not been specified.

Nadir Belhadj is already strongly expected to become Hemdani’s second assistant, following the appointment of Antar Yahia. If both moves go ahead, Matmour would become the fourth former Algeria international involved in the technical staff ahead of the next training camp.

That would give Algeria a coaching structure made up almost entirely of former national-team players for November’s two matches against Togo in the qualifying competition for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

The first fixture will be played at Stade Hocine Ait Ahmed in Tizi-Ouzou on 14 November. Algeria will then travel to Stade de Kegue in Lome three days later for the return meeting.

Matmour holds a UEFA A licence and has been without a club for three years. He began his coaching career at Kehler FV, working successively as an assistant, head coach and adviser.

He later moved into scouting with Bayer Leverkusen before becoming an assistant with the Algeria Under-23 side and with Madjid Bougherra’s Algeria A’ team. That period lasted from September 2022 to October 2023.

Matmour has also regularly worked as a football consultant for AL24 News. He provided analysis of Algeria’s performances at the 2026 World Cup, while his name has also been mentioned as a possible sporting director at MC Alger.

Further additions to Hemdani’s staff are expected. Algeria are reportedly looking for a new goalkeeper coach, a performance analyst and video analysts as they continue to finalise the coaching structure.

The proposed appointments would come as Hemdani prepares for the two-match November schedule against Togo, with both sides meeting in the third and fourth rounds of qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.
