Karim Benzema backs Algeria as devastating fires spread across northern regions

Karim Benzema has expressed his support for the people of Algeria after widespread wildfires swept through several parts of the country, leaving at least 12 people dead and causing significant damage to forests.

The Al-Hilal striker and former Real Madrid player posted a message of solidarity on social media, addressing those affected by the fires, particularly in Kabylie and eastern Algeria.

“All my thoughts are with the victims of the fires that are sweeping through Algeria, their families, the injured and everyone going through this ordeal,” Benzema wrote.

He also praised the firefighters, rescue workers and others involved in efforts to assist those caught up in the disaster.

“Courage to the firefighters, rescue workers and everyone who has come to Algeria’s aid. All my support and solidarity with the Algerian people,” he added.

The fires have affected several provinces, with Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, Skikda and Jijel among the areas hit hardest. Hundreds of hectares of forest have been destroyed by the flames, while some residents were forced to seek refuge on beaches to escape the advancing fires.

The scenes have prompted a broad wave of solidarity across Algeria, as emergency teams continue efforts to contain the blazes and support communities affected by the destruction.

Algeria’s Ministry of the Interior has officially confirmed that 12 people died as a result of the fires. Local reports, however, have suggested that the number of casualties could increase.

Authorities have attributed the rapid spread of the flames to high temperatures and strong winds. Those conditions have made firefighting operations more difficult and hindered the deployment of aircraft used to tackle the fires.

The worst-affected areas include parts of Kabylie and eastern Algeria, where the extensive forest fires have caused deaths, injuries and major environmental losses over recent days.

Benzema’s message came as firefighters and rescue workers continued responding to the emergency, with the striker directing his comments towards both those who have lost loved ones and the wider population enduring the crisis.

His statement focused on the victims, their families and those injured, while also recognising the efforts of the emergency services and everyone involved in helping people affected by the fires.
