Ipswich Town sign Morocco World Cup defender Issa Diop from Fulham on four-year deal

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Morocco international defender Issa Diop from Fulham as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.

The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a four-year contract running to the summer of 2030 after passing a medical, the newly promoted club announced on Wednesday.

Financial details were not disclosed, but multiple European reports say the fee is about €10m (£8.5m).

Diop arrives at Portman Road on the back of an eye-catching 2026 World Cup campaign with Morocco, where he played five matches and scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal against the Netherlands that helped the Atlas Lions reach the quarter-finals.

Aerial presence and defensive leader

In a statement on their official website, Ipswich highlighted the defender’s physical presence and reading of the game.

Standing at 1.94m, Diop has been known in England for his dominance in the air and composure in central defence, attributes Ipswich hope will underpin their survival bid in their first top-flight season since promotion.

His arrival adds top-level experience to Kieran McKenna’s squad as Ipswich look to consolidate their place in the Premier League after climbing out of the Championship.

From Toulouse prodigy to Premier League mainstay

Diop began his professional career at Toulouse, breaking into the first team as a teenager and captaining the French side at an unusually young age for a defender.

His performances in Ligue 1 earned him a move to West Ham United in 2018 for what was then a club-record fee for the Hammers. At West Ham, he quickly established himself as a regular in the Premier League, noted for his athleticism and ability to play from the back.

In 2022 he joined Fulham, where he has since made more than 75 Premier League appearances. Across his time at West Ham and Fulham, he has featured over 170 times in England’s top flight.

That level of experience is likely to be central to Ipswich’s thinking as they reshape their defence for the challenges of facing established Premier League attacks.

World Cup platform and Morocco rise

Diop’s move also follows a period of resurgence for Moroccan football on the global stage.

At the 2026 World Cup, the defender was a key part of the Atlas Lions’ run to the last eight, featuring in five matches. His late goal against the Netherlands in the group stage was crucial in securing qualification to the knockout rounds.

That tournament performance appears to have reinforced his reputation across Europe and helped position him for a return to a leading role in the Premier League.
