Azzedine Ounahi set for lengthy injury spell

Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi is expected to miss 15 matches for Panathinaikos after suffering a severe right hamstring injury that could keep him out of action until next year.

The Panathinaikos midfielder was forced off the pitch on a stretcher during his side’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Asteras Tripolis in the Greek Super League on Sunday, October 18.

Despite the convincing win, the injury to Ounahi has raised concerns for both his club and the Moroccan national team, with initial assessments suggesting the midfielder could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Following an MRI scans, the midfielder is said to have suffered a serious tear in his biceps femoris, raising concerns over his availability for the remainder of the year.

The injury is expected to sideline Ounahi for a crucial period of Panathinaikos’ campaign, with the midfielder expected to miss 15 matches between October 22 and December 20.

The affected fixtures span the Greek Super League, the Greek Cup and the UEFA Conference League, dealing a significant blow to Panathinaikos as they navigate a busy schedule across multiple competitions.

Ounahi is expected to miss league encounters against Volos, Aris, AEK Athens, OFI, Atromitos, Olympiacos and PAOK, alongside other domestic fixtures against Iraklis.

His absence will also affect Panathinaikos’ European campaign, with matches against Kairat Almaty, Nordsjælland, CSKA Sofia, Freiburg and Brighton among the fixtures he is reportedly set to miss.

The Moroccan midfielder’s injury comes at a difficult time, with his recovery also threatening his availability for international duty.

Ounahi is expected to miss Morocco’s upcoming matches against Niger in November as the Atlas Lions continue their preparations for the next phase of their international campaign.

His potential absence will be a concern for Morocco, given his importance in midfield, while Panathinaikos will hope he makes a full recovery and returns to action at the beginning of next year. However, his precise return date will depend on his rehabilitation progress and the medical team’s assessment of the injury.
