Indy Eleven midfielder Noble Okello earns Uganda call-up for Morocco friendlies

Uganda’s long-term planning for continental competition has taken another step forward with the inclusion of Indy Eleven midfielder Noble Okello in the national team squad for two international friendlies scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco over the next two weeks.

The 25-year-old’s selection adds a physical and technically versatile presence to the Cranes’ midfield options as the technical team continues refining its squad ahead of a busy qualification cycle leading into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Okello’s call-up reflects both his growing influence at club level in the United States and Uganda’s intent to blend emerging talent with established internationals during this preparatory window.

International recognition for Indy Eleven midfielder

Okello’s inclusion comes as Uganda intensifies its preparations for upcoming international assignments, with the friendlies forming part of a broader evaluation process for AFCON 2027 qualifiers and future CAF and FIFA competitions.

The team will face Tanzania on June 5 before taking on Madagascar on June 8, with both matches set to offer valuable tactical assessments for the coaching staff.

The fixtures are expected to provide opportunities to test squad depth, refine combinations, and build competitiveness against varied opposition styles.

Further logistical details, including kick-off times and venues, are expected to be confirmed by organisers in due course as Uganda continues its structured build-up toward continental competition.

Friendlies in Morocco as AFCON build-up intensifies

For Uganda, the Marrakech camp represents more than just short-term preparation, serving instead as a strategic checkpoint in a longer development plan toward AFCON 2027.

The inclusion of players such as Okello highlights an emphasis on physical presence and international experience across different leagues.

Standing at 6’5, the midfielder offers aerial strength and versatility, attributes that could prove valuable in high-intensity African fixtures.

The coaching staff is expected to use the two friendlies to assess tactical flexibility and squad cohesion, with a focus on identifying players capable of adapting quickly to competitive international environments.

Club form driving selection

Okello’s call-up follows a strong start to life with Indy Eleven, having joined the USL Championship side on January 15, 2026. He made an immediate impact, scoring twice in three matches within 11 days in March, including a headed goal in the U.S. Open Cup and a composed finish in league play against Hartford Athletic.

His performances have seen him rank highly within the squad for aerial duels won and overall duels, underlining his physical dominance in midfield battles. Prior to this season, he featured prominently for Phoenix Rising FC and Atlanta United 2, consistently contributing goals, assists, and defensive metrics across multiple campaigns.

From Toronto roots to international stage

Born in Toronto, Okello’s career pathway has included appearances for Canada at youth level, as well as a senior debut in 2020. His journey has taken him through Toronto FC, a loan spell in Denmark with HB Køge, and various stints in MLS NEXT Pro and the USL system.

Known for his aerial presence and midfield intelligence, he now adds Uganda senior recognition to an already diverse football background. He joins Indy Eleven teammate Anthony Herbert in receiving international call-ups during the current FIFA window, highlighting the club’s growing international representation.
