Hossam Abdelmaguid snubs Gulf riches to seal £1.3m move from Zamalek to Ludogorets

Egypt defender Hossam Abdelmaguid has turned down offers worth up to four times his new salary in the Gulf to pursue a European career with Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad, his agent has revealed.

The 23-year-old centre-back has completed a permanent move from Zamalek to Ludogorets in a deal worth €1.5m (£1.27m), with further add-ons and a significant sell-on clause for the Cairo club.

Abdelmaguid, who featured for Egypt at the 2026 World Cup and scored the decisive penalty that sent the Pharaohs into the last 16 at the expense of Australia, is seen by his camp as using the Bulgarian champions as a springboard to a bigger move in Europe.

Long negotiations and World Cup scouting

Agent Samer Salama detailed the move in an interview with MBC Masr 2, explaining that Ludogorets had been tracking the defender for months.

He said: “مفاوضات انتقال حسام عبد المجيد الى لودوجوريتس البلغاري استغرقت نحو شهرين ونصف، والنادي كان يتابع اللاعب منذ بطولة كاس الامم الافريقية الاخيرة”.

Talks formally began in April, Salama added, before Ludogorets made direct contact with Zamalek in mid-May.

“الاتصالات بدات في شهر ابريل، وفي منتصف مايو تواصل النادي مع الزمالك، الذي طلب تاجيل حسم الملف الى ما بعد نهاية الموسم، وبعد ذلك سارت المفاوضات بشكل ايجابي حتى اتمام الصفقة”.

Zamalek, one of Egypt’s most successful and best-supported clubs, eventually agreed to the sale after setting strict financial conditions.

According to details previously reported by FilGoal.com and confirmed by Salama, Zamalek demanded €1.5m to be paid in a single instalment upon signing, plus performance-related bonuses of €300,000.

Those additional payments are tied to Ludogorets winning the Bulgarian league or cup and to the club’s participation in European competitions.

The agreement also grants Zamalek 20% of any future transfer fee if Abdelmaguid is sold on, giving the Egyptian side a potential windfall should he secure a move to a more lucrative European league.

In a further protection clause, Zamalek retain a right of first refusal if Abdelmaguid receives an offer from any Egyptian club in future. The White Knights would be given 14 days to match any such proposal and bring the defender back to Cairo.

European dream over Gulf money

Salama stressed that the player walked away from far more lucrative contracts in the Middle East to prioritise his European ambitions.

He said: “حسام عبد المجيد تلقى عرضا من احد اندية الدوري الاماراتي واخر من الدوري السعودي براتب يصل الى اربعة اضعاف ما سيتقاضاه مع لودوجوريتس، لكنه فضل تحقيق حلم الاحتراف الاوروبي، ويرى ان النادي البلغاري قد يكون محطة مهمة للانتقال مستقبلا الى فريق اكبر في اوروبا”.

The agent was keen to dismiss speculation that the Bulgarian move was merely a short-term step towards a transfer to Egyptian rivals Al Ahly.

“انتقال حسام عبد المجيد الى بلغاريا ليس “كوبري” للعودة الى الدوري المصري او الانضمام الى الاهلي، ولو كان هدفه الاهلي لانتظر حتى شهر يناير ووقع مجانا، لكنه يتطلع للاستمرار في اوروبا لاطول فترة ممكنة”.

Abdelmaguid arrives in Bulgaria on the back of a breakthrough year with the national team.

He was part of Egypt’s squad at the 2026 World Cup and held his nerve from the spot to convert the decisive kick in the penalty shootout victory over Australia, securing Egypt’s passage to the last 16.

His new club, Ludogorets Razgrad, are the dominant force in Bulgarian football. They have won 14 league titles, lifted the Bulgarian Cup four times and claimed the Supercup on nine occasions.

The move marks a significant chapter in Abdelmaguid’s career, as he swaps the intense pressure of Cairo derbies for the chance to showcase his talent on the European stage and potentially earn a move to one of the continent’s major leagues.
