Herve Renard emerges as surprise frontrunner for Algeria job despite French coach ‘ban’

Herve Renard has dramatically re-entered the frame to take charge of Algeria, despite the country’s football federation having appeared to rule out appointing another French coach to succeed Vladimir Petkovic.

The apparent U-turn by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) remains dependent on one key condition: the departure of current Swiss boss Petkovic.

In recent days, several reports indicated that the FAF did not want to hand the Fennecs to a French manager. That stance seemed to shut the door on Renard, despite his deep experience in African football and his two Africa Cup of Nations titles – won with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015.

However, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, the situation has shifted. If Petkovic were to leave his post, the former Morocco coach is now viewed as a leading option for Algeria.

At this stage, though, there have been no indications of formal talks opening between Renard and the FAF.

Petkovic’s future the key obstacle

Petkovic remains under contract with Algeria, and his exit has not yet been confirmed. Any decision to dismiss the former Switzerland manager would be expensive for the federation, which is understood to be exploring the possibility of a negotiated settlement rather than a straightforward sacking.

Until that issue is settled, Algeria’s search for a new coach is effectively on hold.

Resolving Petkovic’s situation is seen within the FAF as a more urgent priority than accelerating contacts with Renard or any other candidate.

Renard in high demand after Tunisia stint

Renard is currently unattached after a short spell in charge of Tunisia during the 2026 World Cup. That brief but high-profile assignment has done little to diminish his attractiveness on the international market.

His name features prominently on South Korea’s shortlist to replace Hong Myung-bo, who departed following the team’s elimination at the group stage. Renard’s successful period in charge of Saudi Arabia has maintained his strong reputation in Asian football.

The Frenchman is also being tracked by South Africa, who are seeking a successor to Hugo Broos, while his name is being repeatedly linked with Senegal as well.

This crowded field of suitors underlines the level of competition Algeria would face if it decides to move for Renard.

From Algerian-first policy to experience-first approach

Initially, the FAF appeared to favour appointing an Algerian coach to lead the national side. As the search widened, several Spanish profiles were also discussed within the federation.

The revival of the Renard option suggests the governing body may now be prioritising sheer experience and a proven track record over nationality.

Renard’s detailed knowledge of African football, his honours list and his reputation for delivering quick results make him an attractive candidate for any national federation seeking a rapid turnaround.

Yet for Algeria, those strengths can only be considered once the federation has clarity over its current coach.

Before the Fennecs can contemplate a new era under Herve Renard or any other high-profile name, they must first decide the future of Vladimir Petkovic – a decision that will shape not only the next appointment, but the financial and sporting direction of Algerian football in the coming years.
