Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy has equaled a UEFA Champions League record previously held only by Mohamed Salah—the highest goal involvement in a single season by an African player.
The Guinea international reached this milestone in Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over Lille on Wednesday, which secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate win.
Guirassy played a key role in the victory, providing an assist for Maximilian Beier’s decisive goal. This contribution took his total goal involvements in this season’s Champions League to 14, consisting of 10 goals and 4 assists.
With this, he matched Salah’s record for the most goal involvements by an African player in a single Champions League campaign. The Egyptian forward first set the record in the 2017-18 season while playing for Liverpool.
The 27-year-old striker has been in excellent form throughout the tournament, playing a vital role in Dortmund’s attacking success. His impressive tally highlights his importance to the German club as they continue their push for European glory.
With their victory over Lille, Borussia Dortmund has advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition. They are set to face Spanish giants Barcelona in April as they look to progress further in the tournament. Guirassy’s performances will be crucial in Dortmund’s quest for Champions League success.
